This was completed in 2014. Imagine if 50% of Skyscrapers were required to have this much vegetation.
Bloom
VW bug
I love all the subtle variations between these cross sections. This was the first car I learned to drive…so I’ve always had a soft spot for this vehicle. Learn more about the history of the tiny car here.
Urban Cabin
Fun way to think about having a mountain vibe while dwelling in the city. This project is in New Zealand, check out more here.
Border Wall SeeSaws
This simple playful idea packs quite a punch. Designed by Architecture Professor (UC Berkeley) Ronald Rael. See more images and read more here.
Patrick Marold - Artist
Patrick is one of those artists who can work on a large scale while still keeping his pieces spare. The piece shown below is along the West edge of the Denver Zoo along City Park. See more projects here.
Elevation
I like the bar that is set by the level of detail in this drawing.
Leth & Gori (Danish Architects)
I like all the material choices in this project, as well as the squares and rectangles: tile, plywood, doors, drawer fronts, cubbies, etc. See more about this house on Leth & Gori’s website.
James Turrell - Roden Crater
Turrell has been working with light his entire art career, and has been at work on his staggeringly large scale Roden Crater project since the mid 70s. See a 5min. video revealing some of the chambers created within the crater and hear his thoughts.
Violent Femmes
These guys captured teen-angst in the 80s unlike most other young bands. Their music/lyrics had a sense of humor, wisdom and perspective surprising for teenagers.
Bio SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels)
These panels were designed by Julee Herdt (Professor of Architecture CU Boulder) and students in the Environmental Design program there. Read more here in a short article in Treehugger.
Signal Shed - Ryan Lingard
My favorite thing about this tiny cabin is that the siding has hinged shutters and hatches for covering the windows and doors. See more images here.
Migrant Housing - by architect Bryan Bell
Bell is a former student of Samuel Mockbee at the Rural Studio. This project is one of many that Bryan Bell has worked on for a population that typically can’t afford an architect. See more in Bell’s book Good Deeds, Good Design.
Fig Wasp Story
Another fascinating nature story, this one about the relationship between fig trees & wasps. Watch animation here.
Emergency Housing Mexico (Competition Winners, Honorable Mentions, Finalists)
Below is the winner of the Archstorming competition. Here are some additional projects that placed - lots of strong ideas and clear graphics.
The Breeders - Band
Mostly a Kim Deal (from the Pixies) project. Last Splash was one of those albums, for me, that was in heavy rotation throughout the 90’s. Listen to Cannonball.
Writers’ Retreat
I like the idea of this simple structure dedicated to creating things. See more images here.
Walter Murch - Visual and Sound Editor
Murch edited (both sound and visuals) for more than 25 feature films, including: Apocalypse Now, The Godfather Trilogy, The Conversation, American Graffiti, The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley and so on. Read more here.
Cabin Fervor - Snøhetta (Norwegian Architects)
Snøhetta’s glue-lam super structure on their thoughtful little cabins is a nice touch. See more here.
Syd Mead - Artist (Visual Futurist)
Syd Mead is perhaps best known for the artwork that would shape the art direction for Blade Runner, Alien and Tron. He also worked on Blade Runner 2049 - the image below is from the original. Read more about Syd Mead here.
