Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, Her and on and on. Spike Jonze has directed over 100 movies or videos. Love his vision and energy.
BLDGS - architects
Love the transformation of this old auto parts store into a live/work studio space. See more here.
SHELTER
This is one of those books I refer to a couple times a year. It looks at how humans create dwellings and more, through an anthropological lens - studying early hut techniques to community water and sanitation. It’s just a good reminder that people have been doing this for a long time and there are no right answer but lots of great shared ideas.
Ralph Fasanella - Artist
This painting was housed in the Folk Art Museum (NYC). I love how it captures the dynamic energy of the sleepless city. Check out more paintings and Ralph Fasanella’s bio here.
FOLK ART MUSEUM (NYC) - BY WILLIAMS AND TSIEN ARCHITECTS
This museum (across from MoMA) closed controversially after only being open for 13 years, however, it’s one of the more thoughtful building in which I’ve been. Check out more projects here by the impressive husband and wife and team - Tod Williams & Billie Tsien.
David Hockney - Artist
I love how David Hockney embraced and ran with the photo collage. See more here.
Giuseppe Penone - Artist
Years ago, stumbled upon this guys work. He meticulously reveals younger trees hidden within older trees. Love the metaphor. More here.
Boston - Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge
Just returned from Boston, Maine and New Hampshire. Here’s a bit of information on the iconic bridge.
Sofia Coppola - Filmmaker
She had some big shoes to fill - but has really proven she can make great movies.
Maya Lin - Boundries
Love this book - it should be on every artists’ shelf.
Joel Sternfeld - Photographer
He takes large format photographs (which typ. requires a great deal of setup) - I have no idea how he gets these masterfully composed images.
Charles Bukowski
All of Bukowski’s books feel like they’re part of his lifelong autobiography - but I love this one for it’s abrasive and raw poetry..
OLD DENVER
Love to see photos of Denver before its relatively recent transformation.
Bluebird Theater
A favorite place in Denver to hear live music.
Denver Graffiti
As Denver’s gotten hipper, the graffiti’s gotten more sophisticated and has been popping-up in more places, often commissioned. In this piece, I like how the smoke emminating from the building light fixtures? fills the stair recess and reveals the blackness of space, may need to see this one at night, in case the stars are glow-in-the-dark.
There are plenty of other favorites around 34th & Larimer - I’ll post them throughout the year.
Smog - Bill Callahan
Here is a video of a Smog song. Years ago, saw these guys at the BlueBird Theater in Denver and everyone in the audience was clearly a super-fan. The show ended with the song Ex-con - which is a favorite of mine, thank you Nathan Tolzmann.
Robert Marino - Architect
I love how Robert Marino uses materials, shapes and simple moves to support big ideas, more here.
Rick Joy - Architect
Love his rusty steel boxes in the desert - check out more of his work here.
Alice Guy-Blache
She’s the mother of cinema - check out the trailer for the documentary about her life/career here.

We just entered this competition last week. The gist of the requirements are: to design small sustainable modular housing that’s easily assembled and can support 5 to 11 people - more info here.
